I've just discovered the wonders of barley (we made Katie Z's risotto-like dish using barley instead of risotto and it was such a revelation. I adored it! I shouldn't really have been so surprised (except that I had a deep seated prejudice against barley because of tinned beef barley soup for lunch when I was in grade school).
