Strawberries all over the place right now and now and then I like to eat them in a different way even though I prefer to eat them as they are. This year I seem to be keener on them than usual for some reason, maybe it’s because they seem to be sweeter than usual but to be honest I always binge eat strawberries this time of the year. But I think I have become rooted here in Italy, I have stopped associating strawberries with Swedish summer because for some strange reason we Swedes seem to think that strawberries are typically Swedish and that the best ones are found in Sweden. Which obviously isn’t the case and to be honest I have had my best strawberries here in Italy. But I think this is something we all do, we all tend to associate certain things with our native country and that only. I never liked the word grateful and use it very rarely but I have to say that I am grateful that I have had the possibility to live in different countries and above all to have lived abroad for such a long time as I have. Sure, I am an outsider now, both here and in Sweden but still I find it liberating to be able to choose traditions and to be relatively free from certain nationalistic notions. It seems right that I have to ‘pay’ something for feeling freed.

STRAWBERRIES WITH BASIL HONEY or FRAGOLE CON MIELE E BASILICO

fresh sweet strawberries
fresh basil leaves
runny honey, not too strong

– Shred basil leaves into thin strips or chop them finely before mixing with honey.
– Slice or chop the strawberries and mix with the basil honey.
– Stir and serve!
