Daring Bakers December Challenge-The Yule Log
This month’s Daring Bakers Challenge was the joy and delight of my children. For years and years they have been going on about making a Yule Log before Christmas but I have resisted, I see it as a part of my principles of how to bring up children to prepare them for life’s unfairness and hard times so I just don’t give in all the time. I wish I was less of a tender hearted mother (yes I can be that) and really live as I learn and could show them how unfair life can be by distributing sweets or whatever among the three in a wholly random way. But I can’t. So I try my best in other ways, like not making Yule logs just because they want it so you can imagine how happy they were when they heard that this was what I had to do. They were so happy that they agreed to move our gingerbread house baking to tomorrow so I could make the log last Sunday. This is how they reason the beasts, they want the log but I have to do it so that they can work on the eating of it. OK I did it, not only for them but now I have to figure out a way to get back to my old regime…
Enough of this, let’s get back to the Daring Bakers’ December Challenge. This month our Founders, Lis and Ivonne, decided what we were going to bake and they obviously did the right thing and chose a Yule Log for us to do! I will update this post with a link to the recipe later on because it doesn’t seem to be up now but then we have the luxury of having the opportunity to choose when to post, we can do it either today, the 22nd or tomorrow the 23rd of December.
I can’t say that it was difficult to make this even though I had to make the butter cream twice because the first curdled but I think it it incredible that it worked at all considering that we’re having temperatures varying from 13°C and 16°C indoors right now (damned stone house). We were allowed to fill the log with whatever we wanted but we had to have a brown butter cream as a covering coat on it and then we could choose between marzipan or meringue mushrooms, I went for marzipan ones, so much easier to make. Yes I was lazy, I just for what the recipe said and did not come up with any interesting variations on the theme but I didn’t feel any need to deviate. Neither me nor Marco are any fans of butter cream but this Yule log was meant more for the children than us and they love it! An it was devoured rather quickly I have to say. By me and Marco as well.
If you want to see what the rest of the trillions of us Daring Bakers fared with the Yule Log, here’s the blog roll, just remember that some of us will post about it tomorrow too.
