Daring Bakers Challenge- Bostini Cream Pies
I think that the Daring Bakers is beginning to resemble a tsunami, it just grows and grows and every months it inundates the foodblogosphere. It gets bigger and bigger for every month (this months I think we are more than 200. Correction, I just saw that we are 299!), if it wasn’t just a group of food bloggers who love baking I think I would find it scary, once a month there’s no way you can escape it and this is the day – Run for your life!
This month’s challenge was decided by Mary of Alpineberry, a really sweet and helpful person, and she choose to go for a dessert, Bostini Cream Pies, for the recipe take a look here. I had never heard of Bostini Cream Pies and after reading the recipe I had to google for some images to get a picture of what was expected of me. A Bostini Cream Pie consists of a small orange flavoured chiffon cake, placed over a custard and covered with a chocolate ganache sauce. Very rich and very good, maybe something to eat too often though. The good thing about it was that it is a fairly easy and fast recipe, the bad thing is that this fact obviously made me procrastinate even more. BUT! I have my guardian angels Tanna and Karen who really are the best when it comes to to get me going. We did have some problems deciding on the day and then I almost backed out because I had rushed around the whole morning and felt like an electrified cat and the thought of baking really didn’t attract me at all. But when I started to chat with them on that google chat thing I just got caught up with it and had to start baking and I even think I was the first to finish the challenge. Now I don’t know if that was because I was the fastest or if it means that I am the less conscientious baker than my dear friends, I honestly think it’s the last option but let’s go for the first because it makes me feel better.
So this is what I think about this challenge. One very difficult things about the DB challenges is that the measures and weights almost always need to be converted, it is really difficult to know which conversion list is the correct one and I think this might have been a reason to why my custard was so runny. You wouldn’t think that by looking at the photos but I am a cunning cheater so I put the custards in the freezer so that I could make a nice photo. When I served them to my family, the custard was more like a soup but I think that it made the dessert tastier so I wouldn’t worry so much about the solidity the next time.
I didn’t like the chiffon cake (it felt too spongy) nor the custard (too rich and a bit bland) that much when I tried them separately but I loved the final product, the cake, the custard and the chocolate went so well together! My family loved it too and they are quite picky nowadays so Mary, thanks for choosing such a nice challenge!
If you have the time and energy, don’t hestitate – take a look at what all the rest of the Daring Bakers have made of the Bostini Cream Pies!
