GRANITA DI CAFFE’ E CARDAMOMO (CON CIOCCOLATA) or COFFEE GRANITA WITH CARDAMOM (AND CHOCOLATE)

For some strange reason I have been craving coffee granita for some time now. It is strange because I dislike coffee with sugar intensely, the taste reminds me of migraine headaches; Sauterne wines has the same effect on me but I have no idea where I got that from as I drink neither of them. I mean, I could have got it from drinking coffee with sugar or Sauterne when I actually had a migraine attack or just before an attack but I appear to have got this strange taste notion from nowhere. But nonetheless I suddenly was thinking about coffee granita a lot and as I firmly believe that cravings must be satisfied because maybe my body is sending me an important message that could be of vital importance to my general well being I thought that the Sugar High Friday # 21 – Ice Ice Baby Event, hosted by Sarah of The Delicious Life, was the perfect venue for it. But just making a normal coffee granita was not enough for me, I wanted a very good coffee granita so I added some ground cardamom and some very finely chopped dark chocolate to give new dimensions to it. In the Middle East they often drink coffee with cardamom and I have always liked it but then I am a cardamom addict, I love to put my nose into my cardamom jar and just enjoy the warm smell. There is no real need to add the chocolate but it provides you with a little taste sensation when the actual granita has disappeared on your tongue and it’s warm enough for the chocolate to melt!
The granita on the photos is not really as it should be, I had a couple of things to do so I delayed the photo session with one hour and then the ice crystals had become far too big but the taste is the same even though I prefer it when it is creamier.
And many thanks to Sarah for hosting the event!

GRANITA DI CAFFE’ E CARDAMOMO (CON CIOCCOLATA) or COFFEE GRANITA WITH CARDAMOM (AND CHOCOLATE)

400 ml / 14 ½ fl oz strong coffee, preferably espresso
100 ml / 3 ½ fl oz syrup (1dl / 3 ½ fl oz water + 1 dl / 3 ½ fl oz sugar)
1 tsp ground cardamom
(25 g / 1 oz grated or finely chopped dark quality chocolate)

– Mix sugar, water and the cardamom in a small pan and let it simmer until it is reduced to half.
– Add the syrup to the coffee in a bowl and let it cool down until it’s cold enough to be put it into the freezer.
– Put the bowl in the freezer with a fork in it and remember to stir. It is slow in the beginning but when it begins to freeze it is important to stir often, if you want to make the version with chocolate, you add it when the coffee is half frozen.
– Stir, stir, stir and when it has a creamy consistence with very small ice crystals (not as big as in the granita on the photos if you want to eat/drink a perfect granita), it is ready! It takes about 4-5 hours.
– Spoon the granita into glasses or cups, stick straws or little spoons into it and enjoy!
