CROSTATA DI CIOCCOLATA CON MARMELLATA DI ARANCE E PINOLI or CHOCOLATE TART WITH ORANGE JAM AND PINE NUTS

Today is the day when la Befana, an old woman or rather a witch, brings sweets and presents to the children who are good and charcoal to those who are BAD. Never heard of a child who got only charcoal, they might get some black sugar crystals (yesyesyes, again, I have no idea what it can be called, it’s sugar on a string, the type you bought for your kids in olden times, I know because when I was a teen-ager, I used to work in a museum food shop during the weekends and we sold this) but never any real one although lately I have seriously been thinking of giving my own children some of it! As late as in the Seventies, it was la Befana who brought the presents in my tiny village, not Father Christmas and she is still going strong! So I have made a tart to celebrate a bit, at least I think that this can be classified as a tart, I haven’t really understood the difference between pie and tart as they often look the same. It is something about the crust I believe.

CROSTATA DI CIOCCOLATA CON MARMELLATA DI ARANCE E PINOLI or CHOCOLATE TART WITH ORANGE JAM AND PINE NUTS

Tart crust:
100 /3,5 ozr salted butter
100 ml/0,42 cup sugar
2 egg yolks
400 ml/1,7 cup flour
4-5 tblsp cocoa powder
1 tsp baking powder

1 jar of good orange jam or marmalade
50 g/1,75 oz pine nuts

– Blend butter and sugar well in a bowl and add the egg yolks. Mix it well.
– Sift the flour, cocoa powder and the baking powder into the bowl and mix it into a dough.
– Set the dough in a pan and push it down. My tart pan is so big that I need all the dough but if you have a smaller one you can use a part of it to decorate the tart.
– Spread out the orange jam and distribute the pine nuts on top of it.
– Bake in a pre-heated oven (175°C/350°F) for about 30 minutes.
